Goldfish fin rot is an ugly disease that can be easily prevented
Goldfish fin rot
is one of the most common
goldfish diseases.
This disease is easy to treat, but the underlying cause of the illness must be investigated to make sure it doesn’t happen again. Goldfish fin rot is mainly caused when your pet fish are put under stress. This stress can come from many areas including: infrequent cleaning, not enough oxygen, strange conditions, overcrowding, and being handled too much. If whatever is causing the stress is stopped quickly your pet goldfish can quickly recover, before the disease does too much damage. The sign that something is wrong is a white cloudiness around the edge of your fish’s fins. The fins can have a raggered look or even look about them; this depends on if your goldfish has a bacterial infection or a fungus infection. Some very unfortunate fish can have both. Goldfish fin rot starts at the edge of the fins and destroys the fin tissue until it reaches the fin base. Fin tissue can be rejuvenated, but if the fin rot is allowed to get as far as your fishes body it’s very unlikely that its fins will grow back again. Good news though. Fin rot is easily treated. If your fish has a fungus infection the disease has an even look to it, and you need to dab malachite green on the fungus with a Q-tip. You then need to repeat this if necessary. But, if your pet has a bacterial infection the disease has a ragged look and antibiotics can be added to your fish tanks water. You can also feed them with antibiotic food. This should help to solve the problem. Once you’ve treated your pet, you’ll notice over time its fins growing back again, which is great.
