Here’s why Black Moor goldfish are so popular
The
Black Moor Goldfish
is a very different looking goldfish. When I first saw one swimming around an aquarium in the pet store, I was a little unnerved by it. It seemed to be a silent and ominous looking fish. I now realize that my first impression was very wrong.
As its name suggests, the Black Moor is black. Some goldfish can change their color, but this fish loves its uniqueness, and manages to maintain its unusual coloring. Other than its different color, the Black Moor has protruding eyes that go sideways. This is probably its most distinguishing feature.
Unfortunately the protruding eyes mean that it this unique fish has a hard time seeing, and is partially blind. Because of this, it has a hard time seeing food, and prefers food that sinks to the floor of the aquarium rather than food that floats at the top of the fish tank. It likes to munch on
aquatic plants
and regular veggies such as zucchini, peas and spinach. It’s best to keep this species of goldfish with other sight impaired fish, so that they all have an equal chance of finding food.
This fish has a gentle and very peaceful personality. It also likes being playful and will swim and play with other fish readily.
The Black Moor goldfish is a very hardy fish, and can withstand a wide range of temperatures. Other types of goldfish that are hardy include
Comets,
Fantails,
and Common’s.
This is a great breed for beginners and is always a conversational item.
Should you decide to invite a Black Moor goldfish into your home, you also need to know it likes to dig and uproot the gravel and décor of your fish tank. As its eyes are very fragile to you need to make sure that ornaments have rounded edges, and that silk plants won’t hurt their delicate eye area.
